Acapella version of ‘You Raise Me Up’ will leave you with chills

It’s no great secret that music speaks to the majority of us as though it were its own language.

For almost as long as humans have had ears with which to listen, music has played a huge role in our societies, evoking powerful emotions, inspiring and influencing in equal measure. And though styles may shift and change, certain songs truly are timeless, equally impactful and enjoyed today, often decades after they were first written.

You see, that’s one of the great things about music, and songs more specifically; each artist’s take or spin is unique. Anyone requiring an example of this need only look as far as You Raise Me Up, the popular classic originally released in 2001, since covered by the likes of Josh Groban (2003) and Westlife (2005).

Chances are you’ve heard the song – if you haven’t, you really should – and the fact that it’s reportedly been covered by over 100 artists is testament to its staying power.

Yet of all the renditions of this beloved ballad, readers may never have heard arguably one of the most hauntingly beautiful, coming courtesy of Brigham Young University’s Vocal Point.

As per reports, BYU Vocal Point is a nine-member acapella group founded in 1991 by then-BYU students Dave Boyce and Bob Ahlander. The group quickly surged to immense popularity on campus, not to mention placing fifth in the third season of NBC’s The Sing-Off.

In 2018, the group announced a record deal with Universal Music Group’s classical label, Decca Gold. Jason Bromley, one of the group’s members, said: “We’re ordinary college students doing extraordinary things.”
