A travel vlogger has shared his experience of eating raw chicken at a restaurant that specialises in the food.

Posting to Tiktok under his handle @johnnykyunghwo, the reviewer said: ‘I recently went on a food tour in Haenam, South Korea, where one of the local delicacies is chicken and we went to this one restaurant that specialised in locally raised, free-range chicken where also serve chicken sashimi’.

Known as torisashi in Japan and also called chicken sashimi, it is a dish of raw chicken that can often be eaten with soy sauce and wasabi like other sashimi.

It can also be boiled or seared for about 10 seconds before being served.

Delivering his verdict on chicken sashimi, Johnny surprisingly revealed that it was ‘better than [he] expected’.

Although chicken sashimi has been consumed in other countries for years, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned against taking part in the trend, as you could be at risk of contracting food poisoning

Despite chicken sashimi having been consumed in other countries for years, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned against taking part in the trend, as you could be at risk of contracting food poisoning.

FSA advice states: ‘Raw chicken is not safe to eat – it could lead to food poisoning. Chicken should always be cooked thoroughly so that it is steaming hot all the way through before serving.

‘To check, cut into the thickest part of the meat and ensure that it is steaming hot with no pink meat and that the juices run clear.

‘Consuming raw chicken can lead to illness from campylobacter, salmonella and E. coli. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, and fever. In some cases, these bugs can lead to serious conditions.’

In his review, Johnny did note that the dish ‘didn’t taste like chicken at all’ as he found ‘the meat didn’t have much flavour to it so most of the taste came from the sesame oil and seeds’ in the dish’.

Describing the meal, Johnny added that the texture ‘was like raw fish’ and ‘not slimy at all’, with a ‘firm bite that was still very easy to chew’.

Concluding his review of chicken sashimi, Johnny said he would ‘give it eight out of 10 and highly recommend it’.

Other users in the comments were quick to voice their concerns over eating chicken sashimi and whether that would be safe to do so.
