Federal Manhunt Underway After Deadly French Quarter Attack

A wave of terror struck the French Quarter in New Orleans early Wednesday morning, leaving at least ten people dead in a harrowing attack linked to explosive devices and firearms. As law enforcement agencies work around the clock to investigate the incident, a federal manhunt is underway for three men and one woman suspected of placing explosive devices in the area before the attack.

The gunman, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar, was killed in a brief shootout with police. Inside Jabbar’s vehicle, authorities discovered an improvised explosive device (IED), a black flag associated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and an arsenal of firearms. The Louisiana State Police confirmed that additional explosive devices—pipe bombs wired for remote detonation—were found at multiple locations throughout the French Quarter.

The Attack Unfolds

The attack, described as one of the most coordinated acts of domestic terror in recent memory, began in the early hours of Wednesday. Following the confrontation with police that resulted in Jabbar’s death, bomb squads were deployed across the French Quarter to neutralize the devices scattered in high-traffic areas.

Surveillance footage uncovered in the wake of the attack revealed three men and one woman placing one of the devices. While the suspects remain unidentified, federal officials have indicated that the attack likely involved a larger network. “We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible,” stated Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office.

Intense Security Measures

In response to the attack, the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and Louisiana State Police conducted an extensive sweep of the French Quarter. Bomb-sniffing dogs were deployed to detect potential threats, while the area surrounding the New Orleans Superdome—scheduled to host the Sugar Bowl college football playoff—was heavily guarded. Governor Jeff Landry confirmed that the game was postponed until Thursday evening but reassured the public that security measures would ensure its safety.

Meanwhile, firefighters responded to a fire at a property recently rented by Jabbar. The blaze prompted the evacuation of dozens of residents, further heightening tensions in the city. Bomb squads searched the residence for additional explosives, adding another layer of urgency to the unfolding crisis.

Manhunt and Broader Investigations

As federal and state authorities intensify their search, a bulletin from the FBI’s Houston field office suggested that the operation has expanded beyond Louisiana. Residents of North Houston were urged to avoid certain areas as law enforcement conducted operations believed to be tied to the New Orleans attack. In a YouTube video uploaded in 2020, Jabbar described himself as a Houston native, which has drawn federal focus to the area.

The individuals captured on surveillance footage remain at large, and authorities have not disclosed whether they have been linked definitively to the broader attack. However, their actions in placing the devices have raised significant concerns about the possibility of coordinated terrorism.

A Community on Edge

The French Quarter, known for its vibrant nightlife and historic charm, has been left shaken by the attack. Residents and business owners have expressed both grief and anger over the tragedy. Local establishments have temporarily closed their doors as police maintain a heavy presence in the area.

“It’s devastating to think that something like this could happen here,” said one local restaurant owner. “We’re all just trying to process what happened and hope the authorities find everyone involved.”

Federal Response and Calls for Unity

In a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Governor Landry emphasized the importance of unity and vigilance in the face of such acts. “This was not just an attack on New Orleans; it was an attack on our way of life,” he said. “We will not rest until justice is served.”

President Biden, addressing the nation, extended condolences to the victims and their families while pledging the full resources of the federal government to assist in the investigation. “We stand together as a nation in the face of terror,” Biden stated. “We will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”

A City and a Nation in Mourning

As the investigation continues, New Orleans faces the difficult task of mourning the lives lost while grappling with the impact of the attack. The incident has brought renewed attention to the ongoing challenges of combating terrorism and ensuring public safety.

With the federal manhunt in full swing and additional security measures in place, residents remain hopeful that authorities will apprehend the suspects and restore peace to their beloved city.
