Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Dies Unexpectedly at 32

Doug Kiker, ‘Singing Garbage Man’ from ‘American Idol,’ Dies at 32

Doug Kiker, the contestant who captured hearts as the “Singing Garbage Man” on Season 18 of American Idol, has passed away at the age of 32.

Family Mourns Sudden Loss

Kiker’s sister, Angela Evans, shared the news of his passing on Facebook on March 12.

“He was so loved and will be missed by so many!” she wrote. “You’re singing with the angels now, Bubba. Please pray for our family as we go through this very difficult time.”

His other sister, Donna Kiker Carrillos-Ramirez, also posted about his passing, saying, “Today, I got the call that no one wants to get. We lost an amazing person. He had the biggest smile and knew how to make you laugh… My parents did an amazing job with him.”

The family has not disclosed the cause of his death but has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with funeral expenses.

A Memorable American Idol Journey

An Alabama native, Kiker became an instant fan favorite during his American Idol audition when he performed Rascal Flatts’ “Bless the Broken Road.” His raw talent and emotional backstory brought judge Katy Perry to tears.

“I’m a garbage man. I work on the back of a garbage truck,” Kiker said before his audition. When Lionel Richie asked if he had any prior performing experience, he admitted, “I don’t have any.”

Despite that, his performance left a strong impression. “That was not garbage. It was greatness,” Perry told him.

The judges unanimously sent him to Hollywood, with Richie praising his determination: “For a man who has no idea what his voice can do, for a man who has no idea what key he’s singing in, for a man who has no idea who the heck he can be—he’s here to do one thing: He’s trying to show his daughter that he’s somebody.”

Kiker was eliminated in the Hollywood round but remained a beloved figure among fans.

American Idol Continues Without Him

The second episode of American Idol Season 23 airs Sunday at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, featuring judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and newcomer Carrie Underwood.
