I was driving home from work when my mother’s text appeared on my phone. I pulled into a parking lot to read it, expecting another question about the family cruise I’d spent six months organizing.
Instead, seven words made my stomach drop.
You’re not coming. Dad wants only family.
I read the message three times.
My name is Millie Miller. I’m thirty-three, live in Denver, Colorado, and had just spent $21,840 arranging a luxury cruise for my family.
And apparently, I wasn’t invited.
On the passenger seat sat a small gift bag containing silver seashell earrings I’d bought for Mom. I’d imagined giving them to her during our first dinner aboard the ship.
Now I couldn’t even bring myself to touch the bag.
I called her immediately.
No answer.
