My Ex-Husband’s New Wife Stood Up to Give the “Mother of the Bride” Speech at My Daughter’s Wedding — I Let Her Finish. Then the Screen Lit Up

Here’s what Vanessa didn’t know.

Three weeks before the wedding, Claire had called me and said, “Mom, I need your help with something, and you can’t ask me what it’s for.”

She wanted every photo and every video I had. Every one. From the day she was born.

I spent four nights on the floor of the spare room scanning shoeboxes. I sent her nine hundred files. I assumed it was for the slideshow.

It wasn’t for the slideshow.

Claire had found out two weeks before the wedding that Vanessa was planning to “say a few words.” She’d heard it from Greg, who thought it was a lovely idea.

Claire told her father no. Clearly. In writing.

Vanessa told Claire it was “her day too.”

So Claire stopped arguing. And she made a video. And she gave it to the DJ — who happens to be my nephew, Danny — with one instruction:

If anyone who isn’t on the list picks up that microphone, play this the second they put it down.

The screen said, in plain white letters:

Before my mom gives her speech, I want to give mine.

Then the photos began.

Me, twenty-nine, in a hospital bed, holding a red-faced baby and grinning like an idiot.

Me asleep in a hard plastic chair next to a little bed with chickenpox spots on the pillow.

Me at the school gate in the rain. Every year. Same coat for five of them, because that was the year money was tight.

Me at the kitchen table at 2 a.m. with a pile of college forms, Claire asleep with her head on my arm.

Me in a dress-shop changing room, both of us crying.

There were nine hundred photos. Claire had used about two hundred. Vanessa wasn’t in any of them. Not out of spite. She simply hadn’t been there.

And at the end, a short clip. Claire, filmed on her phone in her apartment a week earlier, looking straight into the camera.

“Mom. You never once told me you were tired. You never once told me you were scared. You never once made me feel like I was the reason Dad left, even when I asked you if I was. Everything good about me, I learned from watching you. I didn’t need someone to choose me. I had someone who never had to.”

The screen went dark.

Nobody in that barn said anything for a second.

Then my sister started clapping. Then the maid of honour. Then the whole of the back half of the room was on its feet.

Vanessa was still standing there with the microphone and a full glass of champagne.

Greg took the microphone out of her hand, very gently, and put it on the table. He didn’t say a word to her. He walked over to Claire and kissed the top of her head.

Vanessa left before the cake. Greg stayed until the end.

And I never gave my speech.

Claire asked me later if I was upset about that.

I told her the truth. I’d written four pages. They said less than her video did in four minutes.

I still have the notes in a drawer.

I have the video on my phone. I’ve watched it more times than I’m going to admit.
