I never thought that on such an important day, the people closest to me would turn away.
Celebrating a milestone birthday is significant, especially when you reach 90 years old.
Patty was excited for her 90th birthday, eager to celebrate with her daughter Angie and grandchildren. Angie planned a special party for her, making Patty thrilled for the upcoming celebration.
The elderly woman enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, who brought her joy after her husband passed away. They reminded her of her daughter Angie, but also resembled their father John, whom Angie had divorced.
Patty felt sorrowful when her daughter and husband separated because she cared for John as if he were her own child. However, she understood that life can be unpredictable, and she accepted that she couldn’t fix their relationship.
On Patty’s birthday, she was excited at first, but then started to worry when Angie didn’t show up and didn’t answer her phone calls.
After waiting for a long time, the doorbell finally rang. Patty, despite her old age, hurriedly opened the door. However, instead of Angie and the grandchildren, it was John who stood there holding a box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers.
John smiled as he exclaimed, “Happy Birthday, Ma!”
Patty was surprised to see John there and exclaimed, “Oh, wow! You didn’t have to come!”
She felt happy that he even remembered. However, it wasn’t surprising since John has always been a very considerate person.
Patty asked him to have dinner with her. John was unsure at first, but when he saw that Patty was alone, he agreed.
In addition, John, who is a great cook, also assisted his former mother-in-law with cooking.
While having dinner, John inquired about Angie and whether she would be okay with him being at her mom’s house. Patty reassured him that Angie wouldn’t mind, as she hadn’t returned any of Patty’s calls and was unlikely to show up.
John got worried and offered to call her. This time, Angie picked up the phone.
John explained to Patty why her daughter wouldn’t be visiting her on her birthday after they chatted briefly.
John’s voice was filled with worry as he revealed that Angie, her new boyfriend, and the kids were all on vacation.
Patty felt shocked. She couldn’t comprehend why her daughter would keep that secret from her. John was furious because Angie took the kids on a trip without informing or discussing it with him.
Patty didn’t even know Angie was seeing someone and asked John if he knew who that man was.
John was visibly upset when he found out that Patty’s daughter had been planning a whole vacation for about a month now, after mentioning it in passing.
Patty felt let down. The minimum Angie could have done was inform both her mom and the father of her children about her plans and that she wouldn’t be present for Patty’s important birthday.
Patty later spoke with her daughter, but her actions still seemed like a betrayal.
