The rain had been falling steadily that Friday evening in Roanoke, Virginia, as Paul Vance waited in his old Ford F-150.
Paul was 38 years old, a residential finish carpenter, and for most of Maya’s life, he had been the man she called Dad.
He had met Claire when Maya was only three years old. He never tried to replace Maya’s biological father, Shane Miller. He simply stayed.
He was there for scraped knees, school projects, soccer games, birthdays, fevers and countless ordinary moments that slowly turned him from Claire’s partner into Maya’s father in every way that mattered.
When Maya was four, she fell from a garden swing and scraped both knees. Crying, she ran past her mother and reached for Paul.
“Daddy, make it stop.”
Paul never forgot those words.
Years later, when Maya turned thirteen, she and her parents began discussing a formal stepparent adoption. Maya wanted Paul’s surname and wanted the legal relationship to reflect what she already felt in her heart.
Then Shane suddenly returned.
He had spent years appearing and disappearing from Maya’s life. He rarely paid the court-ordered child support and often vanished for months or even years.
But shortly after learning about the adoption proceedings, Shane contacted Maya.
He invited her to dinner at his apartment and told her he had “big news.”
Paul dropped her off that evening and planned to return at 9:30.
At 8:42, his phone buzzed.
The message was from Maya.
“Dad, please come get me right now. Don’t call Mom yet.”
Paul immediately turned his truck around.
When he arrived, Maya was already running through the rain.
She climbed into the passenger seat, soaked and shaking.
But she wasn’t crying.
Instead, she looked furious.
“Are you hurt?” Paul asked.
“No,” she whispered.
Then Maya reached into her backpack and pulled out a thick manila envelope.
“He didn’t invite me for dinner, Dad.”
Paul looked at the envelope.
“What is that?”
Maya’s voice broke.
“He wants forty-five thousand dollars.”
Paul opened the documents.
What he saw inside would change everything.
Shane had allegedly made his consent to the adoption conditional on a $45,000 payment.
And he was threatening to fight the adoption and seek extended custody if the family refused.
Paul stared at the papers as the rain hammered against the windshield.
Then Maya began to cry.
“He told me I’m the one who has to convince you to pay him.”
Paul pulled his daughter close.
“You’re not something anyone can buy,” he told her.
But neither of them yet understood how far Shane was prepared to go.
