I knew that voice before she finished saying my name. I would have known it anywhere, at any age, in any condition. It was my own voice, more or less. It was the voice I’d heard in my head for twenty years and then spent ten years trying to stop hearing.

I was thirty years old, sitting at my kitchen island on an ordinary Tuesday with my laptop open and a half-finished coffee going cold beside me. I was answering a work email. That’s it. That’s the whole scene. The most ordinary morning of the most ordinary week.

And then a receptionist said my dead sister wanted me to come get her, and put her on the phone, and my whole quiet, carefully rebuilt life just cracked straight down the middle.
