Julian Vale had called his trip an emergency investor retreat. He kissed my forehead without looking into my eyes, slipped his phone into his jacket, and told me not to make a scene about his absence.
“Don’t be dramatic, Evelyn. I’ll be home before you even notice I’m gone.”
I watched him drive away from our house that morning, one hand resting on my swollen belly. Our son, Daniel, was due in just over two months, and I had spent the previous evening arranging his tiny clothes in the nursery while Julian answered business calls behind a closed door.
